I believe you that you're very happy when people talk in french with you since it is your native language and it also shows that people want to help you, too. ^^
When they see that you have problems speaking/writing english, it's (for me) normal to try (if you can) speaking her/his native language. It also helps your speaking and writing comprehension. ^^
